To soften the putty, heat it with a hair dryer. You can apply caulk over the putty, but it’s best to roughen the surface slightly. Since caulk doesn’t stick well to putty, make sure it touches other surfaces it can adhere to. Siliconized caulk worked well for me.

I cleaned the surfaces, applied the putty, and put the fountain back together. After waiting 24 hours, it was dry as a bone. I’ll definitely use this product again.
