Objective
Protect the wiring sleeves of AC units from weather and environmental damage to prevent rainwater ingress.
Reason
In harsh environments, protective coatings and sleeves are vital for maintaining the longevity and efficiency of AC units. The degradation of these whips necessitates a solution to restore and enhance their durability.
Brief History
The 17 year old building has 112 AC units on the roof. The protective sleeves around the wiring of these units started to deteriorate due to prolonged exposure to UV rays, salt spray, and other environmental factors. This deterioration increases the risk of water entering the building through the conduits, potentially damaging electrical components and causing significant issues.

Time Frame
E/Fusing 140 is a high-performance self-fusing silicone rubber tape designed for emergency leak sealing in harsh environments. With a thickness of 40 mil, it is V0 flame retardant, and operates in temperatures from -65°F to 500°F. Resistant to UV, oil, salt, and chemicals, it remains flexible without cracking and leaves no residue upon removal. Suitable for various materials like copper, metal, and PVC.
Application
The project started with inspecting all 112 AC units to assess sleeve conditions and prioritize repairs. Then cleaning the condenser whip to remove debris and ensure dryness. During application, the whip was tightly wrapped with E/Fusing 140 tape, ensuring full coverage and sealing gaps, especially where the whip meets the conduit connection. Finally, the wrap was inspected for secure adhesion and tested for water ingress to ensure effectiveness.
Why It Works?
- Hydrophobic Properties: Allows rainwater to wash away any contamination build-up on the surface and repelling any moisture.
- Durability: Resistant to chalking, brittleness, and crazing from temperature fluctuations, as well as UV, salt, and chemicals, ensuring excellent aging properties.
- Cost Effective: Delivering a cost-effective and labor-efficient alternative to complete rework.
